Talking Points Re: Red Cross Support of Incoming Corona Virus Repatriation Flights

 

There are two communications tools now available with regard to the Corona Virus and the American Red Cross stance/response.

The media guidance from NHQ remains the same and we remain in a reactive stance for this operation. Themedia statement posted on RedCross.org (https://www.redcross.org/about-us/news-and-events/press-release/2020/red-cross-media-statement-on-2019-novel-coronavirus.html) and the info in the 2019 Novel Corona Virus Talking Points/FAQ may be used (reactively) to RESPOND to volunteer, donor, and partnerinquiries on this matter.  Any query you received that is outside the scope of the FAQ or media statement should be brought to my attention immediately. 

Below are several key FAQs for your awareness. But because this is an evolving situation, and updates/changes may be made to these documents at any time. Therefore you are encouragd you to keep this email handy with all the links to the online locations to reference prior to use.

Q: Is the American Red Cross responding to help contain the spread of this coronavirus in the U.S.?
A:  The American Red Cross is currently supporting government agencies and state officials to assist evacuees traveling back from China. When requested, our role is to provide support items, such as blankets, comfort kits, snacks and stuffed animals for those who have been quarantined at government facilities. Right now, the American Red Cross has not been asked to deploy any volunteers or employees to assist with evacuations or repatriation efforts.

 

Q: What type of support is the American Red Cross providing for evacuees returning from China?

A: The American Red Cross is currently supporting government agencies and state officials to assist evacuees traveling back from China. When requested, our role is to provide support items, such as blankets, comfort kits, snacks, and stuffed animals for those who have been quarantined at government facilities. 

 

Q: If the situation in the U.S. worsens, will the American Red Cross take on a larger role?  

A:  The American Red Cross is closely monitoring the evolving situation regarding the outbreak of this coronavirus. We are currently working with government agencies and state officials to determine what Red Cross support may be needed in the coming days and weeks. For example, if requested by local authorities, the American Red Cross may support individuals or families isolated or quarantined in their homes by providing food and supplies, pharmaceuticals, educational materials and emotional support.

 

Q: Is the American Red Cross providing financial assistance for evacuees returning from China?

A: Not at this time. Any future requests for emergency financial assistance related to this coronavirus will be considered through standard Red Cross procedures.

 

Q: Does the American Red Cross need financial or donations of material goods to respond to this coronavirus?

A: We understand that people want to help, and we appreciate those offers of support. At this time, the American Red Cross is not accepting financial or donations of material goods (masks, gowns, etc.) specific to the coronavirus outbreak.
